Geschichte zum Stadtspital Triemli

The origins of the two city hospitals go back to the great shortage of hospital beds in Zurich from the beginning to the middle of the 20th century. In order to end the untenable situation, Zurich built and opened two city hospitals: in 1953 the Waid City Hospital for the Zurich North region and in 1970 the Triemli City Hospital for the population to the left of the Limmat. In terms of inpatient treatment, Triemli is now the third largest hospital in the canton of Zurich.

As early as 1946, the choice for a new location fell on the area near Triemli, which was and is very easy to reach. On December 4, 1960, around 70 percent of the city of Zurich voted for a loan of 125 million francs to finance the construction project. Planning and execution took almost a decade. On September 1, 1970, the Triemli City Hospital opened its doors: with 81 beds in the clinics for surgery, rheumatology and general medicine.

Over the years, new departments and clinics were added, such as those for ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiac surgery, nuclear medicine, oncology and urology. After many years of close cooperation, the Inselhof Maternité in the Triemli area became a women's clinic and thus part of the Triemli City Hospital. Existing departments were continually expanded and some were completely rebuilt, such as the treatment wing with operating rooms, the intensive care unit and the emergency room.

In the 1990s it became clear: the high-rise building needed to be fundamentally renovated. In order to meet the most modern standards, building a new ward block proved to be the best solution. Zurich voters voted in favor of the construction project in 2007 and approved the loan of 290 million francs. Construction began in 2008 and the new ward was moved into at the end of March 2016. The Triemli City Hospital now has 500 beds.

What do I have to consider:

  • Please make sure that the patient is still in the hospital at the time of delivery so that we can deliver the flowers.
  • Patients who are still in the intensive care unit are usually not allowed to receive flowers until they have been assigned a room.
