History of Hirslanden Clinic La Colline

In 1903, a group of Trinity Sisters from Avignon were expelled from France because of religious persecution and settled in Geneva. With the help of some local doctors, they founded a home where patients of all religious denominations were cared for. This led to the creation of the fifteen-room Clinique La Colline. The choice fell on the hill of Champel, where there was a large private house near the spot where Michel Servet had been burned alive on Calvin's orders.

In 1904 the first operating room was built. The nuns were trained in medical care by a group of doctors from Geneva. The hospital proved so successful that it quickly became clear that an extension would need to be built to accommodate additional rooms and a new operating theatre. It subsequently had a capacity of 40 beds. In 1925 a new wing of the hospital was built. From 1950 onwards, the nuns were gradually supported and eventually replaced by lay staff.

In 1974 the north wing was expanded to accommodate the operations building and radiology department. In 1990, construction began on a day clinic, a physiotherapy center and a fourth operating room.

Since then, all modernizations and building expansions have been fully financed by the Hirslanden Group, with care being taken to preserve the long-standing tradition rooted in the hospital's values.

What do I have to consider:

  • Please make sure that the Patient is still in the Hospital at the Time of Delivery so that we can deliver the Flowers.
  • Patients who are still in the intensive care unit are usually not allowed to receive Flowers until they have been assigned a Room.
