History of the Nidwalden Hospital
The Nidwalden Canton Hospital (KSNW) in Stans is the acute hospital in the Nidwalden Canton. It is an institution under public law and ensures expanded basic medical care in Nidwalden and Engelberg.
The first cantonal hospital in Stans used to be on Nägeligasse and was built in 1866. The building now houses a senior citizens' residence. The hospital was built at its current location in 1964 and renovated and expanded in 1995/96.
The hospital is divided into clinics and competence centers. The clinics include the departments of medicine, surgery, orthopedics and gynecology and obstetrics. The competence centers include anesthesia and pain therapy, nutritional and diabetes advice, the laboratory, the emergency department, the physiotherapy department, radiology, the emergency service, the day clinic, the social service and the clinical pastoral care. Urological and ORL patients are treated by affiliated physicians. A cardiology practice is located in the hospital building. The house has a CT and, since April 2011, an MRI.
The number of beds is 90. Every year, the 424 employees look after around 14,660 patients, of which 4,074 are inpatients (as of December 31, 2010, figures excluding newborns). The Nidwalden Cantonal Hospital is ranked 55th out of the 100 largest employers in Central Switzerland
