History of the Thun Hospital
At the age of 141, I have both feet firmly planted in life at the Thun hospital. I and my committed employees are committed Every day, as a leading national hospital center, we do everything we can to make a qualitatively convincing and cost-efficient contribution to the health care of the population.
So far, so good – but how did I start my business? The city of Thun and the rural communities had discussed me intensively since the 1850s. However, two more decades passed before the Bernese Government Council approved the “Statutory for the Thun Hospital” in 1871. I was born on November 30, 1873.
Pastor August Hopf was present as an obstetrician and, as the first president, he actively supported me. The construction cost around a hundred thousand francs and I had 24 beds. Over time I continued to grow, and other smaller ones followed
Larger new buildings, extensions and conversions. At the beginning of the 20th century, the so-called “segregation house” was added for 17 patients with infectious diseases, and in 1914 the first large extension was built. In the 1950s and 1960s I was able to run the nurses' school, the nurses' house and the ward initiate.
In 1987 I put the new hospital building from 1914 into operation and, as the last major construction project, opened the emergency center in 2012.
I have been the headquarters of Spital STS (Simmental-Thun-Saanenland) AG since 2002.
