History of the Inselspital University Hospital Bern

Between 1958 and 1978 the “island” was extensively renovated. Large parts of the hospital buildings from 1884/85 are demolished; the Inselspital gets a new face. The high-rise bed building, the operating wing, staff houses, the farm building, the laboratory and workshop building, the polyclinic wing 1 and the new children's clinic are being built.

In 1990, the Inselspital gave itself a new structure and thus broke new ground across Europe. The hospital is now run according to entrepreneurial principles. The medical and nursing areas are integrated into the overall management. In 1999, a further structural adjustment followed: the almost 40 university clinics and institutes of the Inselspital were grouped into nine semi-autonomous departments. Patients in particular benefit from this: the treatment processes become more holistic and optimal. At the end of 2009, the cantonal government decided to merge Inselspital with the hospitals of Spital Netz Bern AG. The aim of the “Strengthening the medical location of Bern SMSB” project is to optimize the rising costs in the healthcare system and to be able to survive in intercantonal hospital competition.

After twelve years of construction, the new intensive care, emergency and surgery center (INO) will open in May 2012. The INO replaces the East and West operating wings from the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to operating theaters and the emergency center, the new building also houses the hospital's central laboratories, central sterile supply, intensive care, radiology and nuclear medicine as well as various examination and special rooms on an area totaling around 50,000 square meters.

In 2015, the so-called Inselspital master plan was approved in a referendum. This means that the Inselspital will be able to keep up with rapid medical developments in the future. In addition, the measures included in the master plan will preserve high-quality outdoor spaces and create new ones and protect important historical buildings.

On January 1, 2016, the Inselspital merged with the hospitals of Spital Netz Bern AG (Aarberg, Münsingen, Riggisberg, Tiefenau and Ziegler hospitals as well as Belp hospital and retirement home) to form Insel Gruppe AG. This networking creates the first and largest full-service medical care system in Switzerland.

What do I have to consider:

  • Please make sure that the Patient is still in the Hospital at the Time of Delivery so that we can deliver the Flowers.
  • Patients who are still in the intensive care unit are usually not allowed to receive Flowers until they have been assigned a Room.
