History of the Hirslanden Salem Hospital Bern
The Salem Hospital is a hospital in the Altenberg district of Bern in Switzerland. Together with the Permanence Clinic and the Beau-Site Clinic, it belongs to Hirslanden Bern AG, which is on the hospital list of the Canton of Bern and has a mandate to provide basic medical care. The hospital was founded in 1888 and is part of the Hirslanden private hospital group. In the 2018/19 financial year, 8,785 inpatients were treated by 177 specialists at the clinic.
The beginnings of the Salem Hospital go back to the Diakoniewerk of Sophie Dändliker-von Wurstemberger. In 1844 she founded a hospital on Aarbergergasse in Bern to help those in need. After her death in 1878, her husband Johann Friedrich Dändliker continued her work. In 1888 the Salem Hospital he built began operations. Over time, the hospital was continually expanded and expanded.
In 2002, the Hirslanden private clinic group took over the Salem Hospital. An emergency center was opened in 2004.
